Oh, Baby: New CD is a breakthrough for Denton's Bosque Brown

Posted 10:13am on Wednesday, Mar. 04, 2009

Mara Lee Miller’s voice slices through you like a gust of chilled wind.

It’s only fitting that her unique instrument is placed at the forefront of Bosque Brown’s sophomore full-length Baby, in stores now. Produced by the Baptist Generals’ Chris Flemmons (with an assist from Robert Gomez), the dusty, spare Baby is an electrifying showcase for the Denton collective and its fiercely talented frontwoman.

Punctuated with acappella vignettes that provide a spine-tingling snapshot of her gift (each titled On and Off), Baby unfolds over 14 tracks, sustaining its peculiar, frontier-twee vibe with cuts like Train Song, Whiskey Flats and lead single Went Walking.

Baby cements Miller’s position as one of the most fascinating tunesmiths in Texas. Situated comfortably at the intersection between alt-country and handmade indie pop, Bosque Brown understands the importance of a few rough edges (there’s a wonderful moment near the conclusion of This Town where Miller audibly sniffles, giving the song a charmingly off-the-cuff air).

To celebrate the release of Baby, Bosque Brown will play an in-store gig at Dallas’ Good Records March 7.
