Sound Files (Dec. 17)
PODCAST: Our music critics debate Lil' Wayne, Denton's Doug Burr and Fall Out Boy.
In this week's far-ranging episode of Sound Files, Preston Jones and Ryan Peterson try to make sense of the Grammy nods, including top nomination-getting Lil' Wayne; sing the praises of the Bible-infused music of Doug Burr; and have a falling out, if you will, with Fall Out Boy.
Segment One: Lil' Wayne and the Grammy nominations
The New Orleans native began the year as a popular, if little-known rapper, prominently displayed on all manner of mix tapes and remixes. Fast-forward to year’s end and the man born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. is exploding into the mainstream, snagging eight Grammy nominations, moving from cozy theater performances into massive arena blowouts, headlining the “I Am Music” tour.
Prestonis glad to some variety in the Grammy nods; Ryan is predictably impossible to please.
Segment Two: Doug Burr
Doug Burr’s plaintive voice wraps itself around these spare, often melancholy compositions, and while The Shawl has its roots in the Bible, the songs never feel overtly spiritual. Instead, there’s a sustained air of reverence that makes tracks like Which We Have Heard and Known absolutely stunning.
Preston and Ryan are both bowled over by the beauty of Burr; plus a bonus concert suggestion from Ryan!
Segment Three: Fall Out Boy
While the stylish smarts of Infinity on High have gone missing this time around, it’s possible that the fellas are simply trying to decide what’s next, making Folie a Deux a bit of calculated craziness that satisfies in spots, but isn’t quite the confident next step some might expect.
Preston sounds personally betrayed when he declares this record boring.
