Sound Files: SXSW Preview

AUDIO: Our critics preview SXSW, talk to The Tomorrowpeople and come to blows over U2.

Ida Maria, named after its Norwegian lead singer, is expected to be one of the breakout performers at this year's South by Southwest music festival.

With South by Southwest upon us, the Sound Files guys are here to tell you what acts you should place on your dance card. Also this week: A visit with a long-lost Dallas band finally enjoying its long overdue day in the sun, and a bitter dispute over the newest from Bono and company.

Segment One: South by Southwest preview
Pinning down bands to break big at South by Southwest is like throwing darts in the dark — dangerous and futile. But by patiently sifting through the nearly 2,000 musicians flooding the streets, clubs, bars and back alleys of Austin over the course of four days, some potential diamonds in the rough emerge.
Preston points your attention to Ida Maria, the Norwegian songstress who likes you better naked.

Segment Two: The Tomorrowpeople
In the mid-1990s, the Dallas-based band The Tomorrowpeople made rock music that stood far apart from anything being heard on the radio at the time. But despite landing a major label record deal and recording a debut album, the band never got their chance to shine. Years later, they've reformed and are finally digitally releasing the debut CD that never saw the light of day.
Ryan talks with the band, whose story of worthy of VH-1's 'Behind the Music.

Segment Three: U2
In an era almost entirely consumed by flashy, hooky singles and hip viral marketing campaigns, the Irish rockers retreated to quasi-remote corners of the world and cranked out a record. This isn’t to say the band has lost its way, although many who have devoured such smashes as Vertigo, Walk On or City of Blinding Lights will write off these 11 songs as woefully miscalculated and massively boring.
Preston thinks the record gets better with repeat listens, but Ryan thinks Bono needs to take a long walk off a short pier.
