103 pets in the running for DFW's Model Pet

Photo gallery: Check out the 103 animals vying to win our Model Pet Contest.

Sharen Hyde's Tessie was rescued from a local shelter who earned the nickname Monkey because nothing is out of reach for her. She loves traveling, swimming and boating and has numerous agility titles to her credit. The Hydes are active in rescue, and Tessie is always the first to make the new foster dog (or two) feel welcome.

Morgan Fassett calls Mr. Einstein 2-year-old, 50-pound baby. He came from a shelter in Plano, and Morgan fell in love with his gorgeous long gray coat and puppy playfulness. Like the famous Einstein, Morgan's Einstein is extremely smart, and extremely crazy.

Ely Coulter and Rosco often stroll down to the bars after work, and Rosco is greeted by everyone like an old friend. Ely has been told Rosco has his own MySpace page, which is strange because Ely doesn't know who's behind it. Rosco's always DFW (Down For Whatever).

Susie Thompson's model pet is Nicholas, a Maine Coon and a gentle sweetheart. He will eat cat food but prefers to eat from the table. Every morning, he'll wait patiently for Susie's son Chance to finish his cereal, so he can dive in for the milk. He follows the Thompsons around the house just like a little puppy ... a puppy that meows.

Deoghi loves to perform. He practices his disc-handling skills every day and recently won three medals at the Skyhoundz Disc Dog Competition. And owner Chaz King knows Deoghi was born to be a star because his black and white fur forms the shape of a Texas star on his back. He's also quite a singer.

Once and for all -- which animal makes a better pet?

What makes a model pet? Maybe she's the smartest pet in town. Maybe he's the snuggliest. Maybe dear old Fido has done some truly heroic things in the past, like call 911 while you were choking on a chicken bone. Whatever the reason, we asked you to tell us what makes your cuddly creature a model pet.

Here is a gallery of the photo entries we received. If this doesn't put a smile on your face, nothing will. (And as you can see, we've got an awfully tough decision to make.) We also received one video, below.

The grand-prize winner's pet will appear on the cover of next week's DFW.com Ink Edition magazine, and the winner will receive a framed print of the cover, courtesy of House of Frames in Fort Worth. Lucky runners-up will get to see their pets featured in a photo spread in that issue.
