About the author

Christopher Kelly writes about movies, food, books, art and popular culture for DFW.com. Born in the outer-borough splendor of Staten Island, New York, Chris has long since lost his Sopranos-like accent, but not his love of street festivals or for the 1988 Mike Nichols’ masterpiece Working Girl. He has a secret fondness for VH-1 reality programs and Jay-Z albums.

Yep, We're Liberal!

Who says the media slants liberal? Well, the media.

To wit: Earlier this week, online magazine Slate polled its staff and found that 55 of them are voting for Obama, compared to, um, one who will be voting for McCain.

And today the American Association of Alternative Weeklies took a look at its member newspapers and discovered that 57 of them have endorsed Obama, compared to, um, zero for McCain. Editor and Publisher, meanwhile, surveyed college newspapers, which went 63 to 1 in favor of McCain. (The sole bit of McCain support came from the Daily Mississippian.)

All of which no doubt leads you to wonder: What about the editorial staff of DFW.com? Are they also a bunch of pinko lefties?

Well, here’s our extremely informal poll, with comments:

John Metz: Obama. “For much of the campaign, I was a libertarian-leaning McCain supporter because of my fear of federal government expansion and, above all, funding for and regulation of compulsory education, which is ruining our country. I saw Mr. McCain as a critical, independent thinker, and a good man. However, after I saw Ms. Palin's one-on-one interviews, he lost me. Ms. Palin demonstrates a cursory, or no, understanding of important issues, her social views are troublesome, and I don’t trust her. By choosing her, McCain proves that he puts his political ambitions, not his country, first. And he shows he is no maverick, unless maverick has become synonymous with irresponsible. I do not agree with all of Mr. Obama's opinions, but I believe he is smart, thoughtful, reasonable and well-intentioned, that he understands people like me, and that he will make a fine president.”

Christopher Kelly: Obama. “As a cancer survivor, I was extremely prone to John Edwards, because I admired the way he stood by his wife. Shoot me, I vote on whose personality I like the best. (Also, this was before that unfortunate incident involving the extra-marital affair came to light – sue me, I am a bad judge of character.) I voted for Hillary Clinton in the Texas Democratic primary, once again picking wrong. My vote for Obama is probably his kiss of death – but you really would have to shoot me and sue me before you got me to vote for that opportunistic, reactionary, tempermental crank John McCain.

Rick Press: Rick is on vacation, though John and I privately consulted and we’re pretty sure he’s voting for Obama. If not, we’ll both stop talking to him.

There you have it. More liberal media: Three to zero.

Do you think that’s enough to tip Texas blue?
