Michael Cavanaugh brings to mind the Piano Man at FWSO concerts
Michael Cavanaugh recalls exactly the February day in 2001 when Billy Joel walked into — and changed — his life. On that fateful day, during Cavanaugh’s Vegas dueling-piano gig, Joel gave him a vigorous thumbs-up as the Cleveland native reeled off one perfect Billy Joel song rendition after another. Flash-forward a bit, and Joel hand-picks Cavanaugh to present much of his storied early life by playing his tunes for what would become the Broadway hit Movin’ Out. Ever since that show closed in 2005, Cavanaugh has carved out a stage act based on playing and singing Billy Joel material, mixing in anecdotes about working with Billy the Kid and performing his own songs. Now Cavanaugh brings his eclectic show to Fort Worth, and it’s all but guaranteed to put many in that blissful New York State of Mind.
