Social Bakehouse Cafe’s Tuscan veggie panini and a slice of Italian cream cake S-T/Joyce Marshall

The cuisine: American casual

The draw: Formerly Celebrity Bakery, this cheery dining room became an independent brand during the past summer. You’d need a sharp eye to see a difference, but a frequent customer with a perceptive palate can probably detect the menu upgrades.

It’s a pleasant place for lunch, a light dinner and coffee and sweets, and it’s not as girly as you’d think.

The food: The signature item from an extensive menu is the cranberry-walnut chicken salad, a mixture with good attention to detail. Chopped chicken breast is combined with dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, diced apple and celery, and tossed with honey mustard, which provides a tart effect rarely found in chicken salad. You can get this on a plate with either fresh fruit, pasta salad or a cup of soup ($8.50) or on whole wheat, sourdough or marbled rye ($6.50, with chips).

New menu items include panini and wraps. The Tuscan veggie panini ($7) earns high marks for plentiful fresh baby spinach atop artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomato, roasted red bell pepper strips and fresh mozzarella on ciabatta smeared with basil pesto. Among wraps, best is the mandarin chicken ($7), a low-carb whole-wheat tortilla wound tightly around a mix of chopped chicken, chopped orange, cabbage shreds, minced green onion, shredded carrots and toasted almonds, bound in a sesame-ginger dressing.

If you’re interested in salads providing more greens, the turkey Cobb ($8.50) and Southwest chicken Caesar ($8.50) hold the most interest, but the vegetarian option — a spring mix topped with fresh strawberry slices, mandarin oranges, blue cheese crumbles and toasted almonds ($7.50) — appeals, too.

The sweets and drinks: The most popular pie is buttermilk, and the cake options include a dense Italian cream cake and the beloved red velvet cake (all $2.75 per slice). For parties, to-go cakes ($10, $18 and $28) are ideal.

Lavazza coffee shows up in frappes in coffee toffee crunch, mocha cappuccino and Tahitian vanilla flavors ($2.95). Spiced hot cocoa and chai tea are available, as well ($1.95-$2.95).

The service: Order at the counter and your food arrives at your table in a few minutes, thanks to an efficient staff.

The prices: Sandwiches start at $6 and quiche starts at $5. Kids’ items, including ham and cheese sandwich and grilled cheese, are $5.

The details: Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. No bar; major credit cards accepted; smoke-free; wheelchair accessible.
