Best Stay-in-Town Vacation

A weekend at the Four Seasons Las Colinas, Irving

Find it: 4150 North MacArthur Blvd., Irving; 972-717-0700; www.fourseasons.com/dallas

The back story: The minute you walk into this posh resort, the notion that you’re anywhere near a freeway vanishes within the bubble that carries you to another realm. Thanks to the 400 acres of lushly carpeted land swells, you’ll never hear that far-off hint of the occasional plane headed to nearby DFW. An obsequious staff is ever mindful that you deserve total and complete pampering; and by the time you leave you’ll be wondering why the rest of the world hasn’t discovered that fact.

Don't leave without trying: Lying by the pool while servers fetch frozen cocktails has its own rewards, but you may wish to haul yourself off that chaise long enough to get in 18 holes at Cottonwood Valley, the resort course that’s home to the EDS Byron Nelson Championship tournament on the PGA tour. There are four indoor and eight outdoor tennis courts, too; or you can take a yoga or pilates class in the fitness center.

You should know: Chef Katie Natale is likely to spoil you for all meals eaten after this trip; her cool cucumber soup topped with chile arbol and mango yogurt and her lamb chops with mint pesto are up to little bites of heaven at Café on the Green. If you crave an especially dreamy place to chill between trips to the pool, spa and restaurant, book yourself into one of the villa rooms, each with a private balcony or patio on the golf course.

Honorable mentions: Hotel ZaZa, Dallas; Hotel Belmont, Dallas
