Best Amusement Park Ride

Texas Giant, Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington

Best Amusement Park Ride

DFW.com

This rickety masterpiece reaches fourteen stories high and speeds of 62 miles per hour.

Find it: 2201 Road To Six Flags St., Arlington; (817) 640-8900; www.sixflags.com/overTexas

The back story: Yeah, sure, Six Flags has rides that are infinitely scarier (Mr. Freeze), more state of the art (the Titan), and loopier (Shock Wave). But when it comes to our roller coasters, we like ‘em old, rickety and capable of inducing a three-day back ache. A marvelous example of the classic wooden coaster, the Giant reaches fourteen stories high and speeds of 62 miles per hour, all the while shaking you senseless. It’s 90 seconds of pure, nerve-jangling bliss.

Don't leave the park without also trying: Runaway Mountain might not be the most heart-stopping roller coaster, but on a hot day, this race through a darkened canyon can provide the very literal breath of fresh air you’re looking for.

"It’s 90 seconds of pure, nerve-jangling bliss."

Best time to go: The lines can be brutal no matter when you go — so your best bet is the weeks in April and May before school lets out, and in late August and September, just after school has let back in.

Honorable mentions: Mega Wedgie, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Arlington; The Conquistador, Six Flags Over Texas, Arlington
