Best Gay Bar
Station 4, Dallas
Find it: 3911 Cedar Springs, Dallas; (214) 526-7171; www.caven.com
The scoop: OK, so we need to level with you: The truth is we returned late one evening this summer to S4, the behemoth of Oak Lawn’s gay bar scene, specifically to take mental notes – to count the number of bars, courtyards and drink specials, etc. -- for this mini-article. Instead, we got a little ... how shall we say ... well, distracted.
We showed up at 9:45, and the place was empty, except for the packed house at a “Facts of Life” drag show in the Rose Room upstairs. (Who knew Natalie had such good legs?) The bartender, who was cute in that rough bartender sort of way, told us an unsolicited story about how he chipped his front teeth on a gentleman caller’s body jewelry (you can use your imagination).
By 10:15, the place was halfway to flooded. We took advantage of a short window of $2 well drinks, then showed everyone up on the dancefloor with our sweet moves set to a thumping soundtrack of top 40 and hip-hop remixes. Next we played air hockey with a guy wearing a T-shirt that said “You’ll Do,” then we got roped into a long conversation with the air hockey maestro’s friends, who were trying to set us up with one of their friends. Sometime after 2:30 a.m., we were stopped on the street by a police officer who just wanted to make sure we weren’t driving home. (We weren’t).
Don't forget: Actually, do. Isn’t that the point?
And while you're there: Say hi to the air hockey guy. From what we recall, which isn’t much, he was kinda cute.
