Best Old-School Deli Sandwich
The Rebecca, Carshon’s Deli, Fort Worth
Find it: 3133 Cleburne Rd., Fort Worth; 817-923-1907; www.carshonsdeli.com/
The dish: A more classic sandwich than the one served at this kosher-style deli, established in 1928, can’t be found ‘round these parts. The Rebecca combines three layers of pastrami and smoked turkey with cream cheese and Russian dressing on egg bread, and then the whole preposterously indulgent concoction is grilled. The smart diner takes a friend, who orders the Reuben – a third-pound of hot corned beef with melted Swiss with kraut on rye, get it grilled – and then you split.
Don't wander away without also trying: A toasted bagel with lox and cream cheese or the homemade split pea soup. Cashon’s does the classics with, well, real class.
You should know: Carshon’s doesn’t accept credit cards. Bring your cash or a checkbook. And the dining room closes at 2:30 p.m., period, even if you’re still chewing on your roast beef.
Honorable mentions: Double-decker tuna salad club with bacon on white toast, Cindi’s New York Delicatessen, Dallas; The Reuben, Downtown Market & Deli, Fort Worth
