Wednesday Agenda: Alela Diane at the Modern, jazz series in Dallas

Off to the races

It’s race week, and that means that all those guys from NASCAR who travel in the fast lane are back at Texas Motor Speedway. The official fun begins Thursday with Camping World Truck Series practice beginning at 12:30 p.m. and culminates with Sunday’s Dickies 500 at 2 p.m., part of the 10-race Chase for the Championship in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series. In addition to all the zoom zoom zooming, there will be a pre-race celebration Sunday featuring the music of those sharp-dressed men from Texas’ ZZ Top, who will perform at 11:45 a.m. For more information on all the activities too numerous to mention here, call 817-215-8500 or go to www.texasmotorspeedway.com.

A bit of folk

Carried along by the rising tide of hip, young folk acts (see: Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper), Portland, Ore.-based singer/songwriter Alela Diane fashions genuine tunes that have resonated with fans and critics. Diane released her sophomore album, To Be Still, this year; once her tour is finished, she’ll start on her third record. Diane is joined at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth tonight by equally talented tunesmiths Marissa Nadler and North Texas-bred Bosque Brown. Doors open at 7 p.m. $10. 888-512-SHOW; spune. frontgatetickets.com.

Dynamic jazz duo

Jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis and vocalist Al Jarreau headline the first in a string of performances called Jazz Roots at the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Winspear Opera House in Dallas tonight. The idea is, over the course of the series, to spotlight types of jazz and show how they inform popular music. 8 p.m.; $25-$125. The opera house is at 2100 Ross Ave. 214-880-0202; www.dallasperformingarts.org.
