On the movies: a new Movie Tavern in So7, the Lone Star fest gets ready to roll
New Fort Worth Movie Tavern gets ready to open
If you’ve driven through the So7 development just west of downtown Fort Worth, you’re probably wondering, "When the heck is that snazzy-looking Movie Tavern going to open?" According to the theater’s marketing folks, the grand opening is set for the weekend of Nov. 13-15. Look for radio-station remotes, giveaways and even a tarot card reader. (Will she predict the Oscars?)
The theater is part of a chain that is rapidly expanding nationwide and whose very first location was the Ridgmar Movie Tavern in Fort Worth. This new theater will have in-theater wait-service and an expanded menu. There are seven screens, all digital, at least two of which will have 3-D capability. There also will be chairs and stadium-style seating — so none of those annoying chairs-on-rollers like you find at the Movie Tavern in Arlington.
Oh, and if you can’t wait until the 13th, you might want to swing by a week earlier, when the theater hopes to do a soft launch on three of the screens.
More Lone Star fest movies
The Lone Star Film Festival, set to kick off Nov. 11, has just announced a bunch of new titles. This third edition is looking very promising indeed.
Opening night will feature The Scenesters, a dark comedy about a Los Angeles filmmaker investigating a serial killer, written, directed and co-starring UT alum Todd Berger — it has only shown at a handful of festivals thus far in North America. Closing night brings what should be a contender in this year’s Oscar derby, The Messenger, a drama about a young man (Ben Foster) whose job it is to tell people their loved ones have been killed in Iraq. There’s lots of buzz on this one since its Sundance premiere, especially for the supporting performances by Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton.
A few other titles I’m curious about: the comedy Tenure, which just had its world premiere at the Hamptons Film Festival, starring Luke Wilson and Gretchen Mol; and Strongman, a documentary about "the strongest man in the world at bending steel and metal" (who knew?) that earned good notices this year at Slamdance.
Perhaps most exciting: Legendary actor and musician Kris Kristofferson will be coming to town to accept an award from the festival. Details still were being worked out. Keep checking www.lsiff.com for additional details.
