Eats Beat: Tex Mex to the max

Southlake’s Baja taco battle is only beginning.

Yucatan Taco Stand Tequila Bar & Grill, the Baja fish taco restaurant and tequila cafe from Fort Worth, is opening on Southlake Boulevard.

Yucatan is a step up from the Fuzzy’s and Baja Grill competitors, with tacos plus an elaborate "Latino nuevo" menu of lamb stew, Tabasco rib-eyes and Venezuelan paella. But the main attraction is a selection of tequila flights and Chilean wines.

Yucatan will open around Dec. 1 at 2801 E. Southlake Blvd., in the space where Snookie’s moved out.

The current Yucatan is at 909 W. Magnolia Ave., Fort Worth, www.yucatantacostand1.com.

Arlington has a triple helping of habaneros.

Habanero’s Grill and Cantina is open in Lincoln Square, the second location for a restaurant that started in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Habanero’s lives up to its name with spicy specialties: jalapeño-queso enchiladas and shrimp caliente.

The Arlington location is in a former Italian restaurant; 226 Lincoln Square, 817-861-8300, habanerosgc.com.

A completely different restaurant named Habanero’s Fresh Mex already has opened at 6407 S. Cooper St. (The Fort Worth location’s Web site is www.habanerosfreshmex.com.)

To complicate everything, a gas station taco stand nearby is named Habaneros: The Taco Revolution; 2100 E. Lamar Blvd.

The Cast Iron Restaurant in downtown Fort Worth has premiered a new "Flavors of Texas" menu.

The Omni Fort Worth restaurant’s new menu features buffalo tenderloin, whiskey-barbecue chicken, buffalo chili and pot roast empanadas.

Cast Iron also promises holiday buffets. It’s in the hotel at 1300 Houston St., 817-535-6664; www.omnihotels.com.

Mandola’s Italian Market, the new casual pizza-and-pasta market from the Carrabba’s founders, plans a February opening in south Arlington.

The new location is in the Highlands shops, or try the original, at 4700 Guadalupe St., Austin; www.mandolasmarket.com.

The El Arroyo restaurant in Arlington, a spinoff from an Austin landmark, is returning to Fort Worth with a new location in the Cityview neighborhood.

Look for El Arroyo at 5724 Bryant Irvin Road. The Arlington store is at 5024 S. Cooper St.

Thankgiving preview: Restaurants that will be open and serving include the Mimi’s Cafe locations, the Keg Steakhouse, the Trail Dust Steakhouse in Arlington and Shinola’s Texas Cafe in Springtown.

But if you’re planning Christmas brunch, book early.

Opening any week now: Tillman’s Roadhouse Texas grill at 2933 Crockett St. and Terra Mediterranean Grill at 2973 Crockett St., Fort Worth.

Cowtown Diner, from the founder of Dallas’ Screen Door, is drawing closer to opening at 301 Main St. in Fort Worth.

In the Stockyards, Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in the Stockyards plans an opening near Dec. 15.

Watch for them all to open before the holidays.
