The Sound Files guys spotlight seven Saturday concerts, including Ryan Adams.
It's a concert lover's dream on Saturday Oct. 11, as nearly ten major acts arrive in town to play at various venues. In this week's Sound Files podcast, our resident music experts Preston Jones and Ryan Peterson help you choose from this embarrassment of riches.
Segment One: Gym Class Heroes, The Roots and Estelle at the Palladium Ballroom
On their latest album, The Quilt, the Heroes recruit everyone from Estelle (with whom their touring) to Daryl Hall to help realize these a group of ambitious, devastatingly catchy ditties. They arrive in tow with The Roots, for what promises to be one of the year's more appealingly eclectic concerts.
For white guy rappers, say Preston and Ryan, the Gym Class Heroes are about as good as it gets.
Segment Two: Nikka Costa at the The Loft at Palladium Ballroom
Maybe, at long last, Nikka Costa will have her moment in the spotlight. Costa's funky, sexy -- and critically adored -- sound has long been out of step with the zeitgeist, but with artists like Duffy and Amy Winehouse seizing the spotlight, Costa just might have the opening she's long deserved.
Ryan digs Nikka's Steve Wonder-style funky vibes.
Segment Three: Darius Rucker at Billy Bob's Texas
Rucker's latest, Learn To Live, is actually his second stab at a solo career — and the first explicitly country disc in his catalog. It’s largely a smooth transition, partly because Hootie and the Blowfish’s own brand of multi-platinum pop-rock frequently edged into twangy territory and mostly because Rucker’s marvelous baritone would glow even if he were simply singing the classifieds.
Preston loses all pop music critic credibility when he claims enthusiasm for Darius.
Segment Four: Michael Buble at Fort Worth Convention Center Arena
Smooth of voice, if occasionally foul in his language, Buble is a surprisingly entertaining live performer. He returns to the the Metroplex for the second time this year, with a concert that should pack the rafters with cougars and the young men who love them.
Preston further loses all heterosexual male credibility when he proclaims his enthusiasm for the menace that is Buble.
Segment Five: Ryan Adams at Nokia Theater
In their last area appearance, in 2007, the predictably unpredictable Ryan Adams and his Cardinals limned a nearly three-hour performance with absurd asides, goofy noises, and devastatingly beautiful country-rock. Expect more (perhaps three hours more) for this tour in support of Adams' latest, Cardinology.
Even Ryan is a sucker for a dreamboat like Ryan Adams.
Segment Six: Ghostland Observatory and The Walkmen at the House of Blues
But wait, there's more: Before bidding adieu for the week, Preston and Ryan also take note of shows by Ghostland Observatory and The Walkmen.
Ryan does not care for bands who wear capes on stage.
